Why My Handmade Jewellery Costs More – And Why It’s Worth It
There’s something truly magical about wearing a piece of jewellery that was made by hand. Not just designed – but made. From melting gold to shaping, soldering, polishing… it's a process of creation that holds time, care, and emotion. It’s not mass produced. It’s not rushed. And it’s not made to be trendy for one season.
I’m Marketa – the hands, heart and soul behind Booblinka Jewellery. And today I wanted to share what handmade really means in my world, and why my jewellery costs more than what you might see from big brands who outsource everything.
Because not all jewellery is created equal.
Each piece is different. And every one has a story.
There’s no set formula for how I make a piece. Sometimes I start from scratch – melting down old gold, removing old stones, shaping new wire or sheet, and building something entirely new. Other times, I start with fresh gold or silver in wire form, and work from there.
I solder everything by hand. I file, shape, polish – every detail is refined by me. Some pieces are more straightforward. Others are a challenge from the start and take days, even weeks, to get just right. And sometimes a piece that worked perfectly last time gives me a hard time for no reason at all. That’s what makes it human – it’s not factory-perfect. It’s made by someone who deeply cares.
I don’t cut corners. If something doesn’t feel right, I’ll remake it. Because if I’m not proud of it, I can’t put the energy behind it. That pride is part of the piece. And people feel it.
It takes time – real time.
Yes, I can make a plain silver ring in a couple of hours. But that’s just the structure. The real work is in the details: making sure the solder join is invisible, the finish is flawless, the proportions are right, and the polish has that mirror shine. That’s what elevates a piece from “okay” to extraordinary.
Some pieces come together in a day. Others take days of refining, walking away, coming back, trying again. I’m not working to a clock – I’m working to a feeling. Until it’s right.
And yes – I do get asked why it costs so much.
All the time.
But here’s the truth: once people come into my workshop and see the pieces in person, they get it. The weight. The glow of solid gold. The shimmer of a perfectly set gemstone. The quiet power of a piece that’s been made with care, by hand.
I used to make more affordable, simpler jewellery when I was still learning. But this – what I make now – this is slow-crafted, one-of-a-kind, solid gold, made-to-last, real jewellery. Using high quality stones, ethical materials, and techniques I’ve honed over years.
I only work with what I believe in – because it shows. People can feel when something has soul.
It's about more than the gold and the gemstones.
Every time I finish a piece, I imagine the person who will wear it. I imagine them touching it during the day, feeling grounded or uplifted. I imagine it marking a special moment, or becoming part of their daily ritual.
There’s nothing better than knowing something I made with my hands can bring someone joy.
That’s what handmade really means to me. And that’s why it’s worth every penny.
